What is the function of the rapid setting agent for calcium formate cement?

Calcium Formate (Ca(HCOO)₂) in Cement Hydration: Effects and Mechanisms

Calcium formate (Ca(HCOO)₂), a byproduct of polyol production, is widely used in cement as a rapid-setting accelerator, lubricant, and early-strength enhancer, significantly shortening hardening time and accelerating setting.

In ordinary Portland cement, Ca(HCOO)₂ promotes the hydration of C3S (tricalcium silicate) and increases the formation of ettringite (AFt), thereby enhancing early strength. However, its influence on the hydration of sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) remains unexplored.

In this study, we investigated the impact of Ca(HCOO)₂ on the early hydration of SAC by analyzing:

  • Setting time
  • Hydration heat
  • XRD (X-ray diffraction)
  • TG-DSC (thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry)
  • SEM (scanning electron microscopy)

The findings provide insights into the mechanism of action of Ca(HCOO)₂ in SAC hydration, contributing to a deeper understanding of its performance in alternative cement systems.
